Trail Funding Update LRB4389

Snowmobilers — Important Trail Funding Update ❄️

We want to share some information about proposed increases to snowmobile registration and trail pass fees that are currently being discussed. These ideas are being explored because the cost of maintaining Wisconsin’s trail system has risen dramatically, and the current financial structure can no longer keep up.

Here’s the reality:
• In the 2013–2014 season, the average cost for state trail projects was $31,000
• In the 2024–2025 season, that average has increased to $63,000double
• Costs for new equipment — including tuckers, tractors, and drags — are rising 40–50%
• Current funding isn’t sustainable with the growing expenses and demands
• Increasing registration and trail pass fees would also allow the state to increase reimbursement rates to clubs

While any increase affects individual riders, these changes would ultimately benefit snowmobiling statewide, helping ensure well-maintained, safe, and groomed trails for everyone.

We want to keep our members and community informed and will share updates as discussions continue.
Thank you for supporting your clubs and the trail system we all enjoy. ❄️
